The recently released USA Today coaches poll has Cincinnati up a spot to 15th. Playing the worst teams in the league wasn't really a great set for movement for the Cats. Especially since Michigan was ranked behind them last week and is now ranked ahead of them. Michigan is a pretty good example of why the polls suck. Sure, they got off to a bad start. They lost Mitch McGary for the season and it's like all the pollsters were like "That's it, they are done, see ya later," not paying attention to Michigan winning very many games in a row in a very tough conference. That was until they got Iowa and Michigan State this week. That was enough to turn heads. The polls aren't really a barometer of who is good. They are a weekly snap shot of whoever is voting thinks is good that given week. Is San Diego State really better than teams like Michigan State or Louisville or Kansas? No. Are they 18-1 and playing very well? Of course. One thing doesn't necessarily mesh with the other. But the respect of who is actually good matters somewhat, which makes the polls odd. Ohio State has not played like one of the best 25 teams in the country lately. If San Diego State had the losing streak OSU did, even to the same level of competition, San Diego State would not be ranked. Polls are a quagmire of hypocrisy and bias.
Cincinnati plays their first top 10 team of the season when they roll into Louisville Thursday night. Cincinnati has played one ranked team this year. It was also on the road. It was Memphis. You know how that turned out.
