The announcement was made on NESN right before tonight’s Toronto-Boston game. CBC’s Don Cherry who will be in Boston for the NHL Winter Classic will make a special appearance on NESN on December 30 as the Bruins honor their former coach. In addition, Cherry will do a special edition of Coach’s Corner with Mike Milbury in the first intermission. Here’s the announcement:

DON CHERRY TO JOIN KATHRYN TAPPEN AND MIKE MILBURY AS GUEST STUDIO ANALYST ON DECEMBER 30, 2009 AT 6:30 PM

BOSTON, MA – NESN, New England’s most watched sports network, announced today that flamboyant Hockey Night in Canada host and former Bruins coach Don Cherry will return to Boston to join NESN’s Kathryn Tappen and Mike Milbury as a guest studio analyst on December 30, 2009 when the Bruins host the Atlanta Thrashers. The outspoken Cherry will appear on Bruins Face-Off LIVE beginning at 6:30 PM and on NESN’s intermission coverage from the network’s TD Garden studio.

“Don Cherry is one of the most colorful and opinioned personalities in the NHL,” said Joel Feld, NESN’s executive vice president of programming and executive producer. “We are happy to welcome him back to Boston so that he can share his unique perspective with Bruins fans on December 30th.”

“I’m really looking forward to coming back to Boston and seeing the Bruins play at the end of December,” said Don Cherry. “Tell them to watch for me at the Kowloon up in Saugus.”

Don Cherry coached the Bruins from 1974 to 1979, winning the Jack Adams Award for coach of the year in 1976. Cherry, well known for his passion for hockey and his colorful attire, joined CBC in 1980 as co-host of the popular ‘Coach’s Corner’ segment. Cherry has now been at CBC for 29 years as a commentator and analyst on Hockey Night in Canada and for CBC’s Winter Olympics coverage.

If you’ve seen Coach’s Corner on CBC, it’s one of the most popular segments during Hockey Night in Canada and it’s very highly rated. And Don’s popularity put him on the list of The Greatest Canadian. I look forward to seeing him on NESN later this month.
