The final game of the Sox vs. Sox series was tonight and Clay Buchholz was taking the mound for the Red Sox in hopes of them taking the series. Buchholz has seemingly figured out whatever it was that was bothering him earlier in the season and seems like that pitcher we knew and loved in 2010.
Buchholz unlike most of his fellow starting pitchers did not give up a run in the first inning. Clay didn’t give up a run until the 4th inning when he walked Adam Dunn, a single to Konerko and then Dunn came home to score on a sac fly from Rios. Buchholz kept trucking along though and ended up pitching 8 strong innings. Buch just seemed to get stronger as the inning went on. Clay left the game looking down the barrel of a 0-1 loss, however he pitched himself more than a quality start. The final pitching line for Buchholz was 107 pitches, 8 IP, 1 R, 1 BB, 6 Ks.
The problem was that the offense couldn’t get anything going against the White Sox’s Quintana. The Red Sox had their chances, however they weren’t able to capitalize. In the 3rd inning, Pedro Ciriaco hit a triple that was “this close” to being an in the park homerun. Ellsbury ended up striking out to end the inning, so Pedro was stranded at 3rd. In the 7th inning, the Red Sox had the bases loaded with one out and looked like they were primed to tie the game if not go ahead. However, Will Middlebrooks hit into a double play to end the inning with the BoSox still down 0-1.
Alfredo Aceves came out to pitch the 9th inning and while he put two batters on base, he got the 3 outs we needed and we were on to the bottom of the 9th. If the Sox were going to rally it would have to be now. Matt Thorton took the mound for the White Sox in the 9th. The inning began with a line drive single from Carl Crawford. Pedey ground into a forceout and then Gonzo hit a single. The Red Sox had two men on and then Cody Ross came to the plate. The White Sox decided to have Reed face Ross in hopes of getting out of the inning with a win. Fortunately, Cody Ross had other plans. Ross hit ANOTHER 3 run HR to the Monster to walk off for a win! This is the 3rd 3 run HR for Ross in 2 days. To say he is locked in is an understatement.
