College Basketball Weekend Watch List

tip

With 6 weeks to go until Selection Sunday, here are the big games to keep an eye on this weekend.

Saturday

19. Baylor at 15. West Virginia
12:00 noon – ESPNU

An early afternoon game between two up-tempo teams mired in the middle of the Big XII race. Both teams are talented and athletic on both ends of the floor, which should make for a good end-to-end game.

Illinois at Michigan St
12:00 noon – ESPN

Two teams with postseason uncertaintly clash in East Lansing. The Spartans are hovering right in the middle of the bubble while Illinois is barely hanging on to the bottom of the bubble.

Tennessee at Georgia
12:00 noon – ESPN2

The Vols and Bulldogs are both in the hunt for an NCAA Tournament bid but neither team should feel secure at this point. Tennessee’s tournament hopes took a big hit with a loss to Mississippi State this week. The pecking order in the SEC behind Kentucky is still very much up for grabs.

10. Notre Dame at 4. Duke
1:00pm – CBS

The first time these two met was an exciting back-and-forth game that ultimately resulted in Notre Dame overcoming a 10-point deficit to pull out the win. Jerian Grant (Notre Dame) is squarely in the conversation for ACC Player of the Year while Jahlil Okafor (Duke) is the leading candidate for National Player of the Year.

Providence at Xavier
1:00pm – Fox Sports 1

These are two tournament-caliber teams right now but both have some shaky spots on their resumes. Xavier is 5-6 in the Big East and seems to have been hovering on the top end of the bubble all season. Providence has some bad losses but the Friars have played well in the Big East.

24. Georgetown at 7. Villanova
2:00pm – FOX

The Hoyas look like a Top-25 team on the court, but their tournament resume (including a losing record against the Top 100) still needs a boost. Georgetown hammered Villanova by 20 the first time these teams met.

9. Louisville at 3. Virginia
7:00pm – ESPN

The main event of the weekend. Two of the top teams in the ACC square off. As things stand right now, the ACC arguably has 5 of the top 15 teams in the nation with Virginia, Duke, Louisville, Notre Dame and North Carolina. The Cavaliers suffered their first defeat last weekend against Duke while Louisville came from 18 down to stun North Carolina. These are two teams that play aggressive defense and aren’t afraid to push the envelope. Duke exposed Virginia’s transition defense and the transition game is where Louisville excels.

Harvard at Yale
7:00pm

The top spot in the Ivy League is up for grabs. The Ivy League is the only conference that does not have a conference tournament so their regular season champion gets the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Harvard already has one conference loss while Yale is undefeated.

23. SMU at Tulsa
8:00 – ESPNU

SMU played a tight game with Cincinnati on Thursday night before ultimately falling to the Bearcats. If SMU had won, this game would have been for first place in the American Athletic Conference. Now, SMU is 2 games behind conference leader Tulsa with both teams struggling to secure shaky resumes as tournament time approaches.

Sunday

17. Maryland at Iowa
3:15pm – Big Ten Network

Maryland is a tournament team and at this point of the season is worthy of one of the top 16 seeds (even though the polls have them at 17 right now). The Terps have a solid resume and one of the most exciting freshmen in the country in Melo Trimble. Iowa is a borderline tournament team sitting squarely on the bubble. Iowa is no easy road game and the Hawkeyes could use a win.

San Diego St at Boise St
6:00 – CBS Sports Network

This is a bit of a down year for the Mountain West. In my latest Bracket Prediction, no Mountain West teams were in the top half of the bracket. San Diego State and Colorado State have the best resumes while Wyoming is hanging around the top of the league and is capable of winning the regular season crown. Boise State is also hovering in the top 4 of the league but their resume needs a big boost, which won’t be easy to find in the Mountain West schedule.

Clemson at Miami
6:30pm – ESPNU

This might seem like an odd choice for a game to profile but these are two bubble teams in the middle of the ACC that can not afford a loss. After a slow start to the season, Clemson has built themselves into bubble contenders but can’t afford a setback like losing to Miami. The Hurricanes, meanwhile, have been riding a win over Duke in Cameron for quite some time now and got dropped by 20 by Georgia Tech last week.
