It’s time to take a look ahead to what is in store for us college football fans this weekend. Here is your weekly viewing guide. These are the games you should be watching this week….
Thursday, October 4th
USC (3-1, 1-1) at Utah (2-2, 0-1), 9 PM, ESPN
So far Utah is 2-0 at home and 0-2 on the road. Is it possible for Utah to pull the upset here? It’s possible but not probable. USC still controls their own destiny in the Pac-12 South and they expect to run the table in that division. If Matt Barkley wants to re-start his Heisman campaign this would be a good time to do it.
Friday, October 5th
Pittsburgh (2-2, 0-1) at Syracuse (1-3), 7 PM, ESPN
Honestly, there isn’t much reason to get excited about this game but it’s all we have on Friday except Utah State/BYU, which comes on at 10:15 pm. Syracuse comes in at 1-3 and Pitt comes in at 2-2. Watch to see if Pitt has turned it’s season around after starting 0-2 and if Syracuse can beat a team other than Stony Brook.
Saturday, October 6th
Northwestern (5-0, 1-0) at Penn State (3-2, 1-0), Noon, ESPN
Northwestern comes into this game undefeated and Penn State, at just 3-2, represents the biggest challenge to date for the Wildcats. After dropping their opening two games, Bill O’Brien has Penn State playing some decent football as they are on a three game win streak. If Northwestern can win here, I would expect them to head into their Oct 20th game against Nebraska at 7-0. A couple of other games to keep an eye on in this time slot are Arkansas/Auburn (ESPN2) and Virginia Tech/UNC (ACC Network).
LSU 5-0, 1-0) at Florida (4-0, 3-0), 3:30 PM, CBS
Two unbeaten teams from the SEC battling it out. LSU has struggled to find itself the last few weeks. Can they come out of their shell against a Florida team that seems to be improving every week? On the flip side, is Florida ready for the power running game and fast hard-hitting defense that the Tigers will throw at them? We will learn a lot about both of these two teams this weekend. During the commercials flip over to Oklahoma/Texas Tech (ABC/ESPN2) and see if the Sooners can avenge their embarrassing defeat from last season.
Georgia (5-0, 3-0) at South Carolina (5-0, 3-0), 7 PM, ESPN
Yet another battle of top ten SEC teams. SEC Haters groan but the rest of us can looking forward to an intriguing football game as the Gamecocks and Bulldogs always play close. Which QB will have the better game, Connor Shaw or Aaron Murray? Can the Georgia OL stop Jadeveon Clowney? Can the Gamecocks stop the freshman RB combo of Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall? This should be a fun game that will be decided late in the fourth quarter. During commercials there are three other games of interest to check out so use your clicker freely or just TiVo some of these games; WVU/Texas (FOX), Nebraska/Ohio St (ABC) and Miami/Notre Dame (NBC).
Washington (3-1, 1-0) at Oregon (5-0, 2-0), 10:30 PM, ESPN
It looked like Washington was left for dead after being taken to the woodshed earlier this year against LSU. Last week they rose from the ashes and knocked off Stanford and have put themselves into position to be a player in the Pac-12. If you look at pure stats, this one should be a blow out (Washington is 101st in passing, 106th in rushing, 93rd in points scored whereas Oregon is 52nd in passing, 6th in rushing and 4th in points scored) but Oregon has let teams stick around for the first half the past couple of weeks. Sooner or later that could catch up to them. Will it happen this week?
