Colorado State’s Garrett Grayson’s Buzz Builds, Looks Like a Draftable Quarterback

There does not seem to be a ton of stars amongst the senior quarterbacks this year. It looks as if teams will have to mine the late rounds for potential finds. One of the senior quarterbacks teams will find appealing in that area is Colorado State’s Garrett Grayson.

When watching Grayson, nothing about him says, “Stud NFL prospect”. However, everything about him screams, “lifetime NFL backup quarterback”. And there is nothing wrong with that. Grayson has always been a solid passer for the Rams, but he’s taken a step forward this year. He’s driven the ball better down the field, and throws with improved accuracy. Ball placement is Grayson’s best attribute, and he displayed it to perfection on a would-be touchdown the intended receiver dropped in the third quarter.

On Saturday night, Grayson threw four touchdowns and led a blowout over Hawaii. More impressive, he did it all while visibly bothered by a groin injury. It was the type of gutsy performance NFL scouts will love to see. There are a lot of positives with Grayson as a player. His leadership and toughness will be nice added bonuses on evaluations. Grayson should hear his name called come draft time, and be a nice asset as a backup for years to come.

Other Notes:
–       Bernard Blake is a player I underrated in the preseason process. He’s a really impressive physical cornerback that is still flying under the radar. Blake used the sidelines well last night, and was sticky in man coverage.

–       Ty Sambrailo had another strong game. He made several key run blocks, and just looks so technically sound. At this point, he’s the best prospect in the conference.

–       Devante Davis is back, and he announced as much on Saturday by catching six passes for 114 and a score. It didn’t look like the big wide receiver prospect had missed a beat in his return from injury. He displayed all his plus attributes: size, speed and great ball skills.

–       Scott Harding might have a role somewhere in the NFL. He has some decent receiving skills, but rarely gets to show them with such poor talent around him. Harding always looks concentrated when the ball is coming, and also doubles as a punter.

–       The Lobos pounded the ball against Boise State with multiple running backs. Their offensive line was consistently driving guys off the ball. Right guard Jamal Price was a big part of that. He has ability, but does have an ugly arrest on his record.

–       SaQwan Edwards is another New Mexico player who has a checkered character history. However, he does have some skill as a cornerback. He flashed a bit defending a Boise State receiving corps that was without Matt Miller again.
