Some have suggest the Colts don’t need the likes of Wayne and Mathis. They are wrong.
Teamed with Dwight Freeney, Mathis can be a terror. Take away either and the other is less dangerous. While first-round draft pick Jerry Hughes looks to be a great addition, suggesting he could simply be plugged in opposite Freeney now is silly. He will need time to grow. The whole point to bringing him in is that he can work as a third player behind two top-rate guys with similar body types and give the team a third edge pass rusher.
The Colts need Wayne and Mathis. Neither has much leverage here. They had fair, front-loaded contracts when the Colts signed them and that their salaries are lower now is part of the trade off they made.
