Colts will provide test for Titans’ run game

In his Monday presser, Mike Munchak stated he wasn’t planning on making any personnel changes.

On Thursday afternoon, Terry McCormick of TitanInsider.com tweeted that “Munchak wants to see complete complement of carries to evaluate CJ and run game fully.”

I think McCormick meant to use the word reevaluate, since Munch supposedly performed a full evaluation during the bye week.  Or perhaps McCormick used evaluate in the sense that the evaluation has been and remains an ongoing process.

Chris Johnson already has 93 carries this season but if Munch wants to see 20-25 more, so be it.  I just hope that we’ll either see improvement this week or personnel changes next week.

Sunday’s opponent, the Colts, have given up more rushing yards than every team in the league except for the Rams.  However, that stat is misleading since they’ve had more plays rushing against them than any other team, and by a large margin.  The Colts are giving up only 4.3 yards per carry, which is tied for 16th in the league, or the median.

As the median run defense in the league, if you look at it that way, the Colts should provide a fair test for the Titans’ run game and the flow of the game will ideally allow CJ to get 20-25 carries, or a complete complement, however Munch defines that.

If the Titans don’t show any improvement on Sunday, the personnel changes which are needed seem pretty simple and straightforward.  Javon Ringer for CJ and Fernando Velasco for Eugene Amano.

Amano’s not the only one who’s had problems blocking.  All of the o-linemen, plus the tight ends and running backs, have also had problems at times.  Amano has just had more problems than anyone else, and more frequently, as far as I can tell.

It’s entirely possible that even if those changes are made, there won’t be any immediate improvement.  But it will send a message to the team that Munch was serious when he preached about accountability.  Who knows, maybe even CJ will get the message and start running again like he once did.
