Come on, sports, don’t waste all the good stuff now

Manti

As everyone is aware, February is the doldrums. All you get is an entire month of rehashing the Super Bowl and NBA coverage on ESPN. At least March brings about conference basketball tournaments and the Big Dance, pre-baseball. February is an expansive wasteland of nothingness.

Right now, before we reach the shortest month of the year, which actually feels like the longest, we still have football every weekend, and NFL to look forward to at every point. Even during the two week stretch from the Championship Games to the Super Bowl, we have one more glorious game to look forward to.

The Championship Weekend! We forgot entirely about the NFL! The Ravens and Patriots! The 49ers and Falcons! I think that’s who’s playing! Instead of focusing on football, we have been introduced to stories ranging from Manti Te’o and his fake, dead girlfriend, Lance Armstrong and his admission of cheating and of course, the start of the NHL Season coming tomorrow, only about 3 1/2 months late.

This is one of the last weekends that there will be a predestined topic for discussion and analysis. Two great games of football coming up on Sunday. There has been very little discussion on those topics. We’re spending all our time on stories that are not time sensitive, or are occurring when they should not be. Manti Te’o’s girlfriend was still going to be fake mid-February, and he was already done playing. Lance Armstrong doped for over a decade, and is now retired. Everyone knew that he was a cheater. Why did this have to come out NOW? And don’t get me started on the NHL. That season should have started in October.

With all this stuff coming out now, what will be on our mind next month? Anything? I hope something comes up. (49ers and Patriots win on Sunday)
