Another day, another comeback.
This time it was against the Diamondbacks…after the DBacks had plated 5 ER’s in 3 IP against Jeff Suppan (while former Brewer Dana Eveland only allowed 1 ER in 3 IP in the start), the Crew chipped away at the 6-1 lead, starting off with a 2-run dinger by Corey Hart, then a 4-run 6th topped off with a solo shot by…yup, Laynce Nix. The Crew scored the go-ahead/winning run in the 9th to secure the 9-8 win. Fourteen different Brewers got a base knock, with only Bill Hall getting more than one hit…once again, just 5 of the 15 hits were for extra bases.
On the mound, Suppy got tagged for 7 hits…3 for homers; Ben Hendrickson then went 2 IP, giving up a pair of hits, one walk, and one K leading to one ER; Zack Jackson didn’t fare much better…giving up 5 hits in 2 IP leading to 2 ER…Matt Wise pitched a scoreless 8th and earned the win, while Derrick Turnbow earned the save in the ninth despite surrendering a pair of hits.
The Crew’s Cactus League record is now 6-6, with 20 games remaining…there are no more split squad contests scheduled, so each player will now need to make the most of any playing time they get.
Side note: Fox North broadcast the game…new announcer Brian Anderson, at first glance, seems to be a bit of an upgrade over Darin Sutton. Bill Schroeder is still a moron…he seemed totally enamored by Brian Anderson’s description of Tony Graffanino’s toe injury and proclaiming Anderson as practicing “crack journalism,” apparently unaware that this story was on mlb.com earlier this week.
