TO BE HONORED AT ALL-STAR GAME
Winners to be Featured in Special Pre-Game Ceremony on FOX — July 14th, 8:00 p.m. ET
Nearly Three Quarters of a Million Votes Cast Across the Nation
Major League Baseball and PEOPLE today announced the 30 winners of the “All-Stars Among Us” campaign, which recognizes individuals who are serving their communities in extraordinary ways. The winners will be honored during the pre-game ceremony at the 2009 MLB All-Star Game in St. Louis on July 14 on FOX, at which President Barack Obama will throw out the ceremonial first pitch.
The “All-Stars Among Us” program is central to the 2009 MLB All-Star Summer events dedicated to charitable initiatives and recognition of the important role of community service. Nearly three quarters of a million votes were cast at PeopleAllStars.com by fans across the nation to select the 30 “All-Stars Among Us” winners (one per MLB Club) out of the pool of 90 finalists who are serving as leaders within their communities.
The 80th Major League Baseball All-Star Game will be televised nationally by FOX Sports, with pre-game ceremonies beginning at 8:00 p.m. ET, in Canada by Rogers Sportsnet and Sportsnet HD and televised in more than 200 countries and territories by Major League Baseball International. ESPN Radio will provide exclusive national radio coverage, while MLB.com will provide extensive online coverage.
Major League Baseball dedicated its 2009 All-Star Game and surrounding events to raising funds and awareness for charitable initiatives and celebrating the importance of community service. The charity and community service initiatives, which are themed “Going Beyond,” will be the most extensive in Major League Baseball All-Star history. In addition, Major League Baseball is supporting President Obama’s call for community service through “United We Serve,” a program which encourages Americans to engage in sustained and meaningful community service. President Obama is encouraging all Americans to visit www.serve.gov to find service opportunities in their area.
The 30 winners (summarized with photos and bio information on the following pages) include inspirational stories of the selfless work of individuals who dedicate their time and energy to helping others and improving the lives of those around them.

NEW YORK, June 29, 2009 – Every single vote will matter in each League’s tightest races – Teixeira, Youkilis or Morneau? Pedroia or Kinsler? Hamilton, Hunter or Crawford? Molina or McCann? Ramirez or Rollins? Beltran or Soriano? – as fans cast their final ballots exclusively online via the 2009 All-Star Game Sprint Online Ballot on MLB.com, the official Web site of Major League Baseball. Online ballots for the 16 starting position players in the 2009 All-Star Game will be available through 11:59 p.m. (EDT) on Thursday, July 2.
Entering the final week of balloting, MLB.com has recorded 163 million votes in the All-Star Game Sprint Online Ballot, a 15 percent increase over the comparable 2008 vote total. With millions of votes coming over these last days, fans will determine which players will earn the title of All-Star starter for the 80th Midsummer Classic at Busch Stadium in St. Louis on Tuesday, July 14.
“With fans casting votes on MLB.com at a record pace, we look forward to a historic and exciting conclusion to this year’s All-Star balloting for the elected starters,” said Dinn Mann, Executive Vice President, Content, MLB.com. “These close races have been fascinating to watch each week and leave us eagerly anticipating the second leg of online balloting when the final roster spot for each All-Star Team will be determined exclusively on MLB.com.”
