Beginning last season, after the NFL’s best pass rusher passed away in Deacon Jones. The NFL decided to create an award in the Hall of Famer’s name, which goes to the player who leads the league in sacks at the end of the regular season.
This Sunday, it is coming down to four players, who all have a chance to win the prestigious award. Those players are Kansas City’s Justin Houston, Houston’s J.J. Watt, Baltimore’s Elvis Dumervil, and Philadelphia’s Connor Barwin.
Houston currently leads the league in sacks with 18.0, Watt with 17.5, Dumervil with 17.0, and Barwin coming up the rear with 14.5. Out of the four players, three of them are playing for a playoff spot. Kansas City has a tough match-up against AFC West division rival San Diego, Houston will be facing AFC South division rival Jacksonville, and Baltimore will be taking on Cleveland.
For Barwin, he is the lone wolf of the pack, as the Eagles were eliminated from playoff contention last Sunday. He is still in reach of becoming the sack leader at the end of Sunday as the Eagles will be taking on the New York Giants. This season, Giants quarterback Eli Manning has been sacked 28 times which is good news for Barwin.
When the teams first met in Week 6, the Eagles won 27-0. In that game, Barwin had three sacks and could put up the same production on Sunday in the regular season finale.
