Hillsboro/Fort Worth based middleweight Corey Washington made his return to the ring after over a year of being inactive due to injury and lack of willing promoters. However, his return was bittersweet as the humble young fighter dropped a unanimous decision to Houston’s Nelson Ramos. The fight took place on the Savarese Promotions card from Houston this past Saturday.
Here is the recount from Washington’s trainer, Durwyn Lamb:
“So Corey wins the first round easy. Second round he is winning as well [but] Corey slips and falls and then gets punched in the back of the head and they call it a knockdown.”
Lamb’s frustrations is palatable and the oft-cited controversy surrounding North Texas fighters getting robbed when fighting in Houston is revisited. Still, despite the setback Washington vows a return to the ring. He’s tackled disappointment in his career before and is no stranger to controversy. But, Washington is a fighter, and fighters fight so it goes without saying that he will be back.
The next time, he vows, will be different.
