Corliss Williamson has come home. The Sacramento Kings announced today that the man known as “Big Nasty” by fans and former teammates has joined Michael Malone’s coaching staff.
Williamson joins the organization after spending three years as the head coach of the University of Central Arkansas. Prior to his stint with the Bears, Williamson spent three seasons as both an assistant and later head coach of Arkansas Baptist College.
The 39-year-old player-turned-coach played 12 seasons in the NBA, half of which were spent in Sacramento. After leading the Arkansas Razorbacks to three straight NCAA Tournament appearances and an NCAA Championship, Williamson was drafted by the Kings with the 13th pick in the 1995 NBA Draft. He spent his first four years with the Kings until he was sent to the Toronto Raptors in the trade that brought Doug Christie to Sacramento prior to the 2000-01 season.
After leaving the Kings, Williamson went on to spend just a half season with the Raptors. However, he would go onto enjoy success with the Detroit Pistons, where he won the Sixth Man of the Year award in 2002 and an NBA Championship in 2004. After three and a half years in the Motor City, Williamson landed in Philadelphia where he played just half a season before returning to Sacramento in the trade that ended the Kings’ relationship with former franchise player Chris Webber.
Williamson played 466 games in a Kings uniform, averaging 10.8 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 22.9 minutes per contest. Williamson retired in 2007 and is ranked as one of the all-time leaders in several statistical categories in the franchise’s Sacramento era including seventh in field goals made (1,995), eighth in field goals attempted (4,057), ninth in free throws attempted (1,513), and 10th in points (5,026) and minutes (10,671).
Williamson brings Malone’s coaching staff to five assistants. He joins a stable that already includes Brendan Malone, Dee Brown, Chris Jent and Micah Nori.
