Coug Links on a Tuesday

Happy Tuesday Cougs, and we take another huge step towards the start of the 2012 season.  TWO MORE days and we’re underway from Provo.  CAN’T. WAIT!

Great shot from the Cougar Football Project via Facebook last night.  Martin Stadium at sunset is quite a sight right off Stadium Way.  As nice as it looks in pictures, those who have actually seen the new facility just rave about how great it looks and say that pics just don’t quite do it justice.

Anyway, let’s get through some links and all that on a Tuesday morning, as Thursday night just can’t get here soon enough……

WSU released the official game notes yesterday, as is tradition in game week.  Of course the depth charts are part of the release, and I guess there weren’t a ton of surprises although things looked a little uncertain as to who the starters were in some cases?  You can see the “OR” with the running backs and the QB’s (but QB, really?  Come on now, I think we all know Jeff Tuel is starting!?).  You can catch all the notes here, from WSUCougars.com.

Hey, it’s our first blog ballot of 2012!  Thanks to our good friends at Cougcenter for the reminder too, as they posted their ballot yesterday.  But that’s right, we’re voting again in the SB Nation weekly blog poll, where blogs from across the NCAA football landscape will weigh in every week with their own private poll of just blogs.  We have been hit-and-miss with this over the years, but we’re all in for 2012.  That said, here’s our first attempt leading up to week one:

Let’s face it – it’s EARRRRLLLLYYYY. And we all know that preseason polls can look quite a bit different after a few weeks, if not the first month of the season.  I used to be one of those guys who thought they shouldn’t even do a poll until a month of football had been played, but then again, where’s the fun in that?  Having early polls can hurt the team nobody sees coming in the preseason, and rewards too much based on what happened the prior season.  But oh well, we’ll see how things go (and after about a month, it will be interesting to see what we thought compared to reality!).

Moving on, Christian Caple has a bunch of links from this morning’s blog post.  There is so much here, I don’t even know what to say!  But Caple did have this post about Tuesday’s practice, which is definitely worth a look.  Caple reports among many items from yesterday that Xavier Cooper might be listed atop the depth chart, but he’s still wearing the boot.  Hmmm.

Finally, Howie Stalwick has a scouting report/notebook on BYU.  Howie points out BYU’s experience (29 seniors, 14 starters TOTAL, WIITH SEVEN ON EACH SIDE OF THE BALL) and how well Riley Nelson played at QB after taking over for Jake Heaps in 2011, posting a 6-1 record and throwing 19 TD’s as a starter.  And you know, I think that whole part about Nelson and 2011 gets lost a little bit, in that yeah, BYU wasn’t the best 10-win team in the history of EVER last year.  But Nelson taking over at QB really settled things down on offense, and now he looks poised for a big year leading an experienced, physical team in 2012.

That’s it for this morning.  All for now, and of course, GO COUGS!
