As we get closer to the NFL Draft, rumors, theories, and mock drafts start to become a daily routine. A new one that popped up, has been the idea that perhaps the Cleveland Browns, holding the second overall pick, could simply pass on the selection of a quarterback in favor for a late round pick instead.
It’s an interesting idea, and one that does hold water.
Go back to 2001 when the San Diego Chargers, holding the 5th pick, drafted running back LaDanian Tomlinson in the first round, and quarterback Drew Brees in the second round. Of course, the circumstances were very different at QB back then, but still, the overall strategy could be in play.
The Browns could very well pick the best available player at No. 2, which appears to be Ohio State defensive lineman, Joey Bosa, who would instantly become a hometown favorite.
Later in the draft, Cleveland would have their pick of the litter at QB, which Michigan State’s Connor Cook leading that pack starting in Round 2.
It’s an interesting theory and honestly, it’s one that could have a better outcome for a team looking to get something going. If Bosa were to become the second coming of JJ Watt, then it becomes difficult to blame Cleveland for making this move.
The Browns have several big needs to fill, and we saw that despite their record, Josh McCown didn’t play that bad, especially when you consider that he was practically looking over his shoulder at Johnny Manziel the whole time.
A draft where Cleveland picks up Bosa at four, and Cook in the second, automatically makes them a big winner in the draft, and it’s a strategy worth looking into.
