Could there be a QB controversy heading New England’s way if the Patriots’ play doesn’t pick up?
Raj: Not really. Yes, Brady should blame himself with his performance. But you also have to remember that the offensive line is the main issue. I’m almost certain that Jimmy G, even if he starts off great, will ultimately face the same fate as Brady if the offensive line doesn’t get better. Right now, there showing no signs of improvement so that is a concern. But it won’t cause a quarterback controversy.
Kyle: There will not be a QB controversy during the season, because BB won’t allow it. He will grunt and snort and ignore questions about it. The media will eventually give in and speculate on the off season. I don’t know if any of this matters, as TB12 may not last the season if the o-line doesn’t elevate its collective game. We may see Jimmy G simply by default.
Rick: I don’t think there is a quarterback controversy in Foxboro. Yes, Tom Brady has been struggling, but there is something to the track record that #12 has. However, one thing Brady has to fix other than his lack of accuracy downfield is his body language. It looks awful right now since he shows no patience with his receivers. The receivers aren’t as talented as fans would hope, but they should be able to get the job done. Garoppolo showed good things in garbage time on Monday, but Brady is still the quarterback and it’s not even close. The good thing about this for the Patriots is that they are in the AFC East and have time to figure this out. But, Brady needs to look past his first read at times and hit the open man. Otherwise, the offensive line is not going to give him time to make the throws.
Derek: If Tom Brady were to get hurt similar to what happened to Drew Bledsoe and Jimmy G subsequently came in and lit the world on fire, then, yes, there could be a quarterback controversy brewing. Otherwise, I don’t see Bill Belichick pulling Brady this year, not matter how dysfunctional things get. It’s true that Garoppolo looked much better in the 4th quarter on Monday Night than Brady did earlier in the game, but let’s not forget that the rookie was throwing against a very unmotivated defense that was sitting on a 34 point lead. I hardly think he was facing Kansas City’s A game.
