The Southern Miss Golden Eagles will be in Columbia to battle the beloved Gamecocks in 84 days.

To continue our countdown until that wonderful day and the start of the Gamecocks 2010 quest for glory on the football field, we highlight the #84…

I’d be the worse South Carolina fan ever if I did not use the #84 to highlight the 1984 season.  Before I do that, do note that current USC football player Kevin Madden wears the #84 for the ‘cocks.  He is a back-up TE and use to play at UCF.  Year away from making noise.  Back to 1984….

Joe Morrison, the “Man in Black,” led South Carolina to a 10-2 record, #11 final AP Poll ranking, and a Gator Bowl appearance in 1984. The 1984 season included victories over Georgia, Pittsburgh, Notre Dame, Florida State, and Clemson.

The ‘84 season goes down as the most successful in Gamecocks Football history and one that is always talked about amongst the faithful. Oh and dang you Navy! If not for them a strong chance at a national title shot was around the corner in ‘84.
