The 2012-13 NBA season is just around the corner for the Sacramento Kings. We look ahead to training camp and preseason with head coach Keith Smart and director of player personnel/color commentator Jerry Reynolds in this week’s Cowbell Kingdom Podcast.
Excerpts
As of today, Isaiah Thomas is the Kings’ starter at point guard and its his job to lose, according to Smart. The Kings head coach expects a competitive battle between Aaron Brooks and the incumbent.
As we move into camp, we’re going to have a very competitive camp. We got a lot of guys that are going to be competing and fighting to try and get those positions. His is up for grabs like everyone else’s is because you still have to produce and play every year in the NBA, and his position is no different. He understands that. We all understand that you can’t relax on what you did last year. You have to come into a new year and be ready to go.
When the Kings were championship contenders in the early 2000s, they enjoyed incredible team chemistry. Is the camaraderie on this 2012-13 team anywhere close? According to Reynolds, it is.
Well I think it’s right there, I really do. Now, I think it’s like anything – even in the Vlade (Divac) era, there’s a couple guys that can be a little difficult at times and all that. And you know, I’m not saying that talent-wise it’s a match, at least yet. But certainly from the chemistry and the guys kind of enjoying each other’s company and knowing they’ve got to work and what level they’ve got to do it, it’s pretty impressive in my opinion.
