There is a deadline approaching for Morris Claiborne on May 3rd and it is the option for the Cowboys to give him a 5th-year on his rookie contract. The 5th-year option is only applicable to players selected in the 1st round. The Cowboys would in essence be guaranteeing Claiborne a roster spot and a whopping $11.1 million for the 2016 season, he’s done zero to earn such a deal.
Several teams have already begun exercising their 5th-year options on their 1st round selections from the 2012 draft class.
Andrew Luck, David DeCastro, Melvin Ingram, Stephon Gilmore are just a few names that have recently been extended. Typically, you’ll exercise the 5th-year on franchise, cornerstone players, Mo Claiborne is not that.
I don’t expect an official announcement from the Cowboys until after the draft; otherwise, that could tip their hat to other teams that the Cowboys have CB high on the draft boards.
All this intrigue with Brandon Carr and Mo Claiborne is the reason the Cowboys will likely move on when they draft a cornerback in an early round.
