With rampant speculation that Craig Anderson could miss upwards of six to eight weeks because an Ottawa Sun source said surgery was required on the 30-year-old Anderson, who was still in hospital Thursday, general manager Bryan Murray addressed the media this afternoon to quell all rumours and conjecture surrounding Ottawa’s number one goaltender.
Anderson suffered the cut and severed the tendon in his pinkie finger while preparing a meal after Wednesday night’s victory over the Washington Capitals.
Even though Bruce Garrioch (@SunGarrioch) tried to some hilarious cover up stories1 by tweeting that Anderson is ambidextrous, Scott put it best (@Wham_City) by stating that Anderson’s a workhorse. He just refuses to rest, even at home.
Kidding aside, Murray passed along these details this afternoon:
“We were told (Thursday) it was going to be some period of time. (Friday) we got a little better news. As soon as he feels comfortably he can handle a stick, he’ll be back on the ice, probably as early as next week,” said Murray.
“When he can handle a stick, he can probably get ready to play. There’s no time frame. We’re optimistic that it won’t be a long, long time.”
Thank the skies. For anyone who is familiar with the Senators’ string of bad luck at the goaltending position, news that Anderson will not be out for as long as some anonymous source had originally indicated will be well received.
Fortunately with a 91.9 percent probability of making the playoffs, per Sportsclubstats.com, the Senators have a large enough cushion that they should be able to hold the fort until Anderson is able to return.
Of course this hasn’t stopped vultures like Steve Yzerman from calling Bryan Murray to let him know that Dwayne Roloson is available. Frankly, I’m convinced that Stevie Y is taking Ottawa’s rebuild philosophy too literally. It doesn’t include Roloson’s career. Forget the 8-11-2 record, his peripherals stink. With a 3.67 GAA and a save percentage of .883, Roloson resembles Stephen King more than he does a NHL goaltender.
