Wow what a Tuesday for South Carolina fans. Three big stories out of the gamecocks camp today dealing with football –
First, USC backup qb Reid McCullum is going to transfer out of the program for a better chance at playing time. Not a big surprise with this story due to the fact he is buried in the depth chart and the highly talented Connor Shaw started classes recently and figures to push for backup duties this fall. Reid was very good at Summerville and can be good at another program if he so desires that route. Good luck!
Second, the Gamecocks Assistant Coach for Defense (i.e. Defensive Coordinator) Ellis Johnson continues to “just say no.” Coach Johnson turned down Georgia in late December, squashed rumors of him to La. Tech and most recently said no thanks to Coach Dooley at Tennessee. I feel this is great to hear for two reasons: one, he loves USC and is committed. Second, people know he is that good and what him after leading again a top defensive showing in the SEC. But with this means more money so expect to see a raise coming his way very soon.
Last, USC TE Weslye Saunders is again in the Spurrier doghouse. He got handed a suspension today due to “attitude and work ethic issues.” Seems the knuckle-head has not been fully sold on the offseason workout program and missed a team meeting recently. For Saunders it is time to step and act like a leader. Saunders has tons of potential but learn your lesson; let your playing speak for you in 2010.
