What is the CrossFit Games Open?

Since its inception in 2007, the CrossFit Games has grown from a small competition on a ranch to a worldwide battle to be the fittest man or woman on Earth. CrossFit is one of the few sports that you don’t have to be drafted or a professional to compete. Anyone has the ability to train and earn a spot to compete in the CrossFit games, and it all starts with the Open.

The 2015 CrossFit Games season begins on February 26 with an event called the Open. Last year, over 209,000 people from around the world competed in the Open, and that number will continue to rise with the sport’s popularity.

So what is the Open?

On February 26, Dave Castro, the Director of the CrossFit Games, will announce 15.1, the first of five workouts in the Open. Announcements will take place every Thursday and can be seen on Games.CrossFit.com. After each announcement, all athletes have until 5 p.m. PT on the following Monday to complete and submit their score.

There is no limit to the number of times a competitor may complete a workout, but the score posted closest to the close of the workout will count. Each workout that an athlete completes needs to be judged properly through two methods. Competitors can be judged in person at one of the many CrossFit affiliates around the world, or they can video their workout and post it online for the community to judge.

This year, CrossFit is trying something new by adding a scaled option for each of its workouts. The scaled option will provide either lower weights or less difficult movements, so that more people can compete in the Open.

The CrossFit Games is a three-part event. After the open, the top 20 men and women from each region on the U.S. move on to the second part, Regionals. From there, the top five men and women advance to the CrossFit Games.

To sign up for the Open, all you need to do is:

1. Sign up at games.crossfit.com
2. Pay a $20 registration fee

It’s that simple. So, what are you waiting for? Sign up and join some of the fittest athletes in the world and compete for your chance to earn a spot in the CrossFit Games.
