Crunch netminder Cedrick Desjardins stopped 24 shots to earn his first shutout of the 2013 Calder Cup Playoffs and ninth consecutive victory. The Crunch’s penalty kill unit was perfect on the night, holding the Falcons scoreless on five man-advantage opportunities.
The Crunch put the first tally on the board with just under five minutes left in the first period. Ondrej Palat found an open Richard Panik, who was able to beat Curtis McElhinney for the breakaway goal.
After a scoreless second period, Palat wasted no time doubling the Crunch’s lead with a shorthanded goal eight seconds into the third frame. With Mike Angelidis serving the end of his second period roughing penalty, Palat wrapped around the net to score from the glove side of McElhinney.
Tyler Johnson then extended the lead to 3-0 with the Crunch’s second shorthanded goal of the period at the 7:24 mark. With two seconds left on a Radko Gudas tripping penalty, Palat passed to Johnson on the stick side of the net. J.P. Cote earned his first point of these Calder Cup Playoffs with an assist on the play.
The Crunch will host the Falcons again Friday, May 17 at 7 p.m. for Game 4 of the series.
