JCostelloSyracuse Crunch general manager Julien Brisebois announced that the club signed left wing Jeff Costello to a one-year AHL contract yesterday afternoon.

Costello spent the last four years at Notre Dame and he served as the team’s captain for the 2013-14. During last year’s campaign the 6-foot, 212 pound forward registered 13 goals and 9 assists. During his collegiate career he accumulated 82 points (41 G, 45 A) in 145 games. He was originally selected 145th overall in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft by the Ottawa Senators. The Lightning acquired his rights in the June trade with the Vancouver Canucks that included defenseman Jason Garrison.

He attended the Lightning’s Development Camp in July and made a strong impression. Literally. He cracked a pane of glass at the  Brandon Ice Sports Forum with a slap shot and recorded seven goals during the three-on-three tournament. When the Bolts didn’t offer him a deal by August 16th Costello became a free agent. He fielded AHL offers from other organizations. As he told the Syracuse Post-Standard his experience with the Lightning won out:

“I’m really excited and really happy that it ended up working out with Tampa. Playing in Syracuse is going to be a great experience. I’ve only heard good things about the organization.”
