We get it. It’s been a long time since the Chicago Cubs have won the World Series.
So I’ll spare you the history lesson (for example…the Titanic had yet to set sail, Theodore Roosevelt was president and a fresh-faced Jamie Moyer was in just his third season), and suggest it’s probably a safe bet to say it’s been nearly the same amount of time since the Loveable Losers were favored to win it all.
Until now.
According to ESPN, the Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas has installed the Cubs as a 4-1 World Series favorite. Not too shabby.
Other teams garnering some consideration by the oddsmakers…the Houston Astros and Los Angeles Dodgers (both at 10-1), the Boston Red Sox and New York Mets (12-1 apiece) and the defending World Champion Kansas City Royals at 18-1.
“It’s amazing to see how many people are betting the Cubs,” MGM assistant manager Jeff Stoneback said. “Every year, there are always a lot of tickets. Now that they’re good, you can basically double that. You get the people that are betting them just because they’re the Cubs and the people who are betting them because they actually think they’re going to win. That’s increased the ticket amount.”
On the other end of the spectrum are the Cincinnati Reds, Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies. The trio, who coincidentally had the three worst worst records in baseball last season, check in at 300-1, 500-1 and 500-1 respectively.
