An interesting nugget of information was dropped by the Team 1200’s Steve Llolyd during this morning’s In the Box program on Stephane Da Costa’s status and subjection to waivers should he not crack the Senators’ roster out of camp.

Steve Lloyd: Da Costa could have had a hat-trick last night. He was excellent. I don’t think he’s going to be here. I don’t see a scenario, barring some injuries at the center position during training camp, where he is going to be with this team, but the question is going to be – could they possibly get something for him at the end of camp? I don’t know if they could, but he needs waivers.
Jason York: I’d be very surprised if a team used a waiver claim to take him.
Lloyd: And Hoffman, speaking about another young player who needs waivers.
York: Three of them right? Three guys have to clear of the potential people…
Lloyd: Of the bubble guys.
York: One guy is not a bubble (guy).
Lloyd: Gryba is staying. Gryba’s going to make the team, but he would need waivers if he didn’t.

In this modern NHL world, contract status plays as much a role in the decision making process as performance, so how these players measure up against the performance of their peers should be something to keep an eye on – even if the risk that these players would be scooped up by another organization is small.
