Daily Cup of City 6 (12/16/13)
Villanova continued its rampage through the City 6 Sunday. La Salle is the bus.

Yesterday’s Action

Villanova 73, La Salle 52

As the old saying goes, when the writer’s away, the Cats will play…or something like that. When we last had our Daily Cup of City 6, Villanova was in the midst of a three game run through Philadelphia foes, and they have emphatically answered the question about who is the current king of the city. After grounding the Hawks in their house last Saturday 98-68 behind huge games from JayVaughn Pinkston and James Bell, it was Darrun Hilliard’s turn to lead the way, finishing with a game-high 21 points in yesterday’s dominant victory over the Explorers.

La Salle had held serve in a win against Stony Brook last weekend, but as has been the case all season, was not prepared for any step up in the level of competition. Jerrell Wright was the only Explorer who showed a pulse in this contest, scoring a team-high 20 points and collecting 7 rebounds. La Salle couldn’t find the basket with GPS, a map, or some sort of tribal divining rod, shooting just 1-13 from behind the arc and accruing only 18 points in the second half as Villanova blew the game wide open. The Explorers will look to put the pieces back together when they take on Wagner at home Thursday, while Villanova will remain on the main line this weekend to face Rider.

Box Score

Drexel 72, Davidson 58

Since we last left the Dragons, they easily dispatched of Tennessee State last weekend, and now wiped the floor with a struggling Davidson club. The Wildcats were once again without leading scorer and rebounder De’Mon Brooks, but Drexel isn’t shedding any tears for them as they continue to play well despite the loss of Damion Lee. Frantz Massenat stuffed the stat sheet in Sunday’s win, dropping a game-high 25 points, 7 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 blocks, while Chris Fouch added 17 points.

Massenat was playing well all season but has really stepped up to assume more of the scoring load lately, with yesterday’s win marking the third straight game over 20 points for the senior guard. The Dragons will need another big effort from him and the rest of the teammates when they enter the Hawks Nest to face St. Joe’s Wednesday night.
