Yesterday’s Action
La Salle 80, Wagner 54
After a bad loss to rival Villanova, the Explorers needed to put their foot down and have a dominant effort against a struggling Wagner Seahawks squad. Mission accomplished. La Salle never trailed in the contest as the front line of the Explorers completely controlled the action against Wagner. La Salle held a 50-29 rebounding advantage on the game, including collecting an incredible 22 offensive rebounds. On the Explorers’ very first possession of the game, they grabbed five offensive boards before finally getting to the foul line, setting the tone for the type of tenacious effort they would put forth throughout all 40 minutes.
Center Steve Zack was an animal on the glass, finishing with a career-high 17 rebounds to go along with 12 points and 4 blocks. Fellow big man Jerrell Wright dropped a game-high 17 points and 7 rebounds. It was a wire-to-wire impressive performance from the Explorers, but unlike Wagner, most teams will not be overwhelmed by what is really an average-sized La Salle frontcourt. The Explorers will need to have these guys continue to pound the glass down low, in addition to getting their guards going in Tyrone Garland and Tyreek Duren, if they’re really going to make waves in the A-10. Still, this game was certainly a step in the right direction.
