On Monday, as I mentioned in the recap, the Tigers and Oakland A’s had a rain delay that left fans at the ballpark with nothing to do but drink beer, eat peanuts, and stare at a wet tarp for two plus hours. Some fans decided to stick it out, but others opted to cut their losses and head home. Well, for those that stuck it out, they got to see somewhat of a rarity : a player do a tarp slide.
The recently perfect Dallas Braden provided the entertainment at Comerica Park by imitating an inside the park home run, capping it off with a perfect head first tarp slide. So much for having the flu and taking it easy on that ankle injury.
It brought back memories of a game I was at in June 2008 when the Tigers were playing the St. Louis Cardinals. There was a 2+ hour mid-game rain delay and Todd Jones came back onto the field wearing a Magglio Ordonez jersey and one of those “Magglio hats with hair.” He then gave his impression of Magglio’s walk-off homer from the 2006 ALCS, but topped it off with a classic tucked-leg, feet-first slide.
