Dallas Cowboys RB Lance Dunbar Talks To LA Rams

It took Dallas Cowboys free-agent running back Lance Dunbar six whole days in free agency to take his first visit.

But it’s been so long since Dunbar was in a game that he may have forgotten how the NFL works.

ESPN.com reported that Dunbar was one of two visitors to the Rams facility on Wednesday. Philadelphia Eagles outside linebacker Connor Barwin, a former pupil of defensive coordinator Wade Phillips when the two were with the Houston Texans, is the other.

The 27-year-old Dunbar could be a steal for the Rams. According to the Dallas Morning News, Dunbar touched the ball only 27 times in 2016—16 receptions, nine carries and two kickoff returns. He still managed to score the first touchdown (a rushing TD) of his five-year career.

Dunbar appeared to be ready to have a breakout season in 2015 with the Cowboys, who were one year removed from the DeMarco Murray era and one year away from the Ezekiel Elliott era. In four games, he amassed 21 receptions for 215 yards, and he had 67 rushing yards—54 of which came on three carries against the New Orleans Saints—until he suffered a season-ending knee injury.

The Cowboys had been rotating Darren McFadden and Joseph Randle. The Cowboys released Randle after six games, and shortly after he repeatedly ran afoul of the law and still is in prison today.

As Dunbar came back in 2016, McFadden had become the third-string back behind Elliott and Alfred Morris.

Dunbar could spell Rams starter Todd Gurley and become an effective third-down weapon out of the backfield for quarterback Jared Goff.
