Undefeated Junior Welterweight Maurice Hooker (12-0-1, 9KO’s) hails from Dallas, Texas and he isn’t called “Mighty Mo” for nothing. It is early in this young man’s career, but Hooker stands tall in the ring as he sizes up his opponents. With power in both hands, he can take an opponent out with either one. If the punch is with the right hand, it could be lights out! On Friday, January 17, 2014 at the Cook Convention Center in Memphis, Tennessee, Hooker will be opening the live telecast on “SHOWBOX: THE NEW GENERATION.”
Leading the promotion of this fight is DiBella Entertainment, which brings the first fight of 2014 for SHOBOX on Showtime with a scheduled twelve bout fight night. It also brings ten undefeated fighters on the card, including “Mighty Mo” Hooker from the Lone Star State.
His opponent is Abel Ramos (8-0, 4KO’s) from Arizona, who is an undefeated fighter as well. Both fighters will be stepping up their game as they both move up in scheduled rounds boxed. Each will be facing their first eight rounds of boxing and it should be one of the best fights of the night in the junior welterweight division. Ramos will be entering the ring after two wins in 2013 and Hooker will be continuing into 2014 with four knockouts in his last five fights of 2013.
Fighting out of the Maple Avenue Boxing Gym in Dallas, Texas, Hooker finished up his training camp with head trainer Vincent Parra in Las Vegas, Nevada. In preparation for some of his fights in 2013, Hooker put in sparring work with current WBO light welterweight champion Ruslan Provodnikov (23-2, 16KO’s) and former world champion Miguel Cotto (23-2, 16 KO’s).
NTF caught up with Mighty Mo in Memphis, Tennessee and after training for approximately three months for this fight he said “I feel good and I will be looking for the knockout.” He is ready to make the scheduled 142 pound limit on Thursday at the Jerry Lee Lewis Café on the famous Beale street in Memphis. When asked what he knew about his opponent, the confident Hooker said he was aware of his opponents record and then said “I’m gonna see if he can take my power.” He knows that he is opening the live telecast on SHOBOX, but said he was still going to come into the fight just as if it was another fight. He sounded very focused and said “I’m just going to do my thing…and I will be looking for a fifth or sixth round knockout.”
Mighty Mo is dedicating this fight to “The Greatest, Muhammad Ali,” whose birthday is on January 17, 2014. To his fans in Dallas, Texas and the Maple Avenue Boxing Gym, he said “Keeps your eyes open because I am coming home with the win!”
