Dallas-based boxer Roberto Marroquin has long been considered one of Texas’ best and brightest prospects. The 22-1 professional boxer has seen his stock rise considerably over the past couple of years and it seems that all the hype was warranted as the Oak Cliff native will finally get his much anticipated shot at a title.
North Texas Fisticuffs has learned from a source close to Marroquin that the amiable fighter will battle two-time Cuban Olympic gold medalist Guillermo Rigondeaux for the Cuban’s WBA Super Bantamweight Title. The fight will take place September 15 at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, NV. The bout will be part of the HBO PPV televised undercard with the main event of the night being the much-anticipated showdown between Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Sergio Martinez.
Marroquin, who trains out of Fort Worth’s Reyes Boxing Gym, last fought this past June, stopping Arturo Santiago in two rounds. Rigondeaux captured his WBA title here in North Texas when he gutted out a split decision victory over Ricardo Cordoba in Cowboy Stadium back in 2010.
