Dana’s Dastardly Distraction

Say what you will about UFC boss Dana White, but you can't deny that the man is a great businessman who knows how to keep his minions in line.  The recent uproar over the UFC's criminally low fighter compensation levels and White's handling of it proved that once again.  When fighters recently complained about the extremely low pay that the guys at the bottom of the cards get, White enacted a dastardly distraction plan (whether he realized it or not) – he said that the company would seriously consider getting rid of the beloved end of night bonuses and discretionary locker room bonuses and use that money to pay the bottom rung guys more.

This ploy, of course, worked perfectly for the big boss man – instead of being in an uproar over the amount the company is paying its fighters, the fighters and the media turned their uproar instead towards the possible elimination of the bonuses.  Then today Dana became the hero by declaring that he listened to the feedback from the fighters concerning the issue and that the company will not be getting rid of the bonuses after all.  Excellent, excellent ploy, Mr. White.  Distract.  Deflect.  Change the subject of the debate.  Come out smelling like roses.  So the pay situation in the UFC is exactly the same as it was before, but now Dana looks like a good guy for keeping the bonus structure in place.

This man ought to run for political office.
