While the Pistons still haven't made a move, the Red Wings made a bit of a baby splash on Day 1 of NHL free agency.
After 17 years with the Ottawa Senators, the Sens' captain Daniel Alfredsson agreed to a one-year deal to win a Cup before he retires. The right winger will be 41 in December.
The Wings also signed center Stephen Weiss after he spent 11 seasons with the Florida Panthers. Weiss, 30, signed a five-year, $24.5 million deal. Injuries prevented Weiss from playing more than 17 games this past season, but should be a 20+ goal scorer if healthy.
The Weiss deal means the end of the Valterri Filppula era, who signed with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Damien Brunner and Dan Cleary may be goners as well.
