There were several regular players missing during the Blues' 4-2 loss to the San Jose Sharks. One of these was David Backes who was forced to sit out after suffering an upper-body injury against the Ottawa Senators on Monday night. Backes' absence snapped his consecutive game streak, ending his run at an impressive 274 games. If you want to throw playoffs into the mix, Backes' run was 289 games.
The St. Louis captain last missed a game back on January 25th, 2010.
It's unclear just how long Backes will be out, but the most recent update listed him as "day-to-day" and coach Ken Hitchcock believes he'll miss about a week. Considering the injury appeared to happen when Backes was hit in the head by Colin Greening's helmet, the logical conclusion is that the upper-body injury has to do with his head. Backes stumbled off the ice under his own power, but it was clear his bell had been rung.
