David Krejci has agreed to a six-year, $43.5 million extension with the Boston Bruins today. Krejci is one of the biggest contributors for the Bruins on the first line, and at the age of 28, is entering the prime of his career. Krejci had a +/- of 39 which ranked as the NHL leader among all others who qualified. He also contributed 19 goals and 50 assists in a career year for the Presidents’ Trophy champions.
In light of the salary cap problems facing the Bruins, this was an important first step in solving those issues. One of the worst possible scenarios that could have happened would be seeing Krejci walk away at the end of next year. Instead of letting that happen, they got it done before the season began, similar to what they did with some of their other stars such as Patrice Bergeron and Zdeno Chara.
Additionally, the Bruins still must deal with resigning restricted free agents D Torey Krug and RW Reilly Smith before the season begins. They were able to also lock up Matt Fraser on a two way deal for 1 year, but they still face issues this year and beyond. It has also been said that Krug has received a large deal from the KHL in Russia, which could factor into some decisions being made in the Bruins front office. Only time will tell what the Bruins front office has in mind.
