Aside from waiting to see if the Phillies will be able to move Jonathan Papelbon or if there will be any interest in the possible return of Joe Blanton (more on that one in a bit), the Phillies made some front office changes Wednesday afternoon. David Montgomery is not returning to his position as team president. Instead, Montgomery is taking over the role of chairman in the Phillies office. With Montgomery as chairman, in whatever capacity the chairman is responsible for, Bill Giles has been named chairman emeritus. Pat Gillick will continue to serve as the team president.
Howard Eskin reported last October the Phillies were not going to have Montgomery back as team president after he had stepped back from his work to focus on his health. Today’s news appears to confirm Eskin was accurate with his previous report. In a statement released Wednesday the Phillies say Montgomery should still be able to remain active in various activities tied to the Phillies, but this also cuts back on his responsibilities when it comes to being the face of the front office.
The good news in all of this is Montgomery feels healthy enough to carry out his duties for the team, even if in a new role.
