David Ortiz and Jason Bay

David Ortiz proved a lot of doubters wrong last night as many were calling for his outright release from the team.  Look at what was written hours before last night’s game:

If I’m Theo Epstein I thank David Ortiz for his service but send him off on an ice floe or a burning viking ship or whatever it is you do with old DHs who can’t cut it anymore. Harsh? Maybe. But the AL East is pretty harsh too, and the Red Sox stand 6.5 games behind a couple of teams who show no signs of slowing down.

Something has to be done.  David Ortiz has got to go.

Should the Mets cut Jason Bay?  His numbers look pretty similar to Ortiz’s:

David Ortiz 4 Home Runs 7 RBI’s  .171 average 25 strikeouts

Jason Bay 1 Home Run  9 RBI’s .238 average   33 strikeouts

Ortiz still has a long way to go to earn back confidence from many in the Nation, and one game does not mean he is completely out of his slump, but it is too early to write his obituary.
