Let’s say you’re making a movie about the April 2013 Boston Marathon bombing and one of the scenes calls for you to re-create David Ortiz’s iconic “this is our fucking city” moment…who do you get to play Big Papi?
Chiwetel Ejiofor? Good choice, but, nope.
Perhaps an ultra-bulked up Taye Diggs? Also…nope.
You get the man himself.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, “Patriots Day” director Peter Berg will be mixing in actual news b-roll with re-created footage in the Mark Wahlberg-fronted movie. But as for the Ortiz speech…he’s obviously opting for the real thing.
“Mark [Wahlberg] and I go way back. He came and approached me the other day, asking me about it. And I said, ‘No problem.’ It sounds like it’s going to be fun,” Ortiz told ESPN.com. “It’s about history, and I’m a big fan of movies based on true stories. When they came out and asked me about it, I could agree with it.”
“Patriots Day” is scheduled for a limited release in theaters in Boston, New York and Los Angeles on December 21. It’ll open wide January 13.
