Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you already know that David Ortiz is calling it quits following the 2016 season.
Just don’t give the Boston Red Sox slugger the season-long farewell tour like Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera recently received.
“I know they did that for DJ and Mariano,” Ortiz said Saturday at his charity golf tournament. “Those guys are well-deserved. I didn’t announce my retirement because I was expecting any of it. I announced it because I know our fans have a hard time getting into Fenway and I know that they would love to watch me play in my last season. I want to make sure before we get there, they get comfortable with their tickets and stuff. That’s why I announced it.”
Even though he doesn’t want it, something tells me that once his season is done, he’s still going to be packing up at least one requisite rocking chair, a couple of awful paintings and, for some reason, a pair of cowboy boots.
That said…there is one thing Ortiz does want in his final season that Jeter and Rivera didn’t get.
“I would love to go home with a championship,” Ortiz said. “I think the way Dave Dombrowski is doing things, I love it. I love it. I think he has an ace now. He’s got a closer. I wouldn’t mind if we get another power hitter.”
Boom. Game on.
