Hopefully we don’t jinx things by bringing attention to this: David Perron is having a pretty good season.
Flying under the radar beneath Ryan O’Reilly’s strong performances and the team’s overall lacking efforts and disappointments, Perron is on pace to at least approach his best goal-scoring total of his career.
Through 39 games, Perron is second on the team in scoring with 14 goals. He needs just two more goals to match his total from the entire 2017-18 season (16) when he skated with the Vegas Golden Knights. However, it is worth noting that his overall point production has slipped as he’s not finding as many assists since returning to St. Louis.
Perron’s goal total, 14, follows seasons in which he scored 16, 18, 12 and 17 goals. You have to go all the way back to 2013-14 when Perron was with the Oilers to find his best season (28 goals). At his current pace, Perron could challenge that 28-goal high … though that might be wishful thinking.
Perron is currently enjoying a 21.9 shooting percentage. That’s miles above his career average of 12.4 percent. It’s also way above his 12.7 percent rate he maintained in his 28-goal season in 2013-14. Odds are he’s going to regress closer to his career average, indicating his goal-scoring pace could slow up. Perron also fired 220 shots in that 28-goal season. He’s only at 64 in 2018-19.
Summarized, Perron is one of the better stories to focus on for the Blues. In a year that has been loaded with negativity and sadness, Perron’s return to St. Louis has been a fruitful one. It’s likely his pace will slow, but that shouldn’t take away from his strong contributions so far this season.
