David Stern appears optimistic about Sacramento’s progress toward building a new downtown arena. The NBA commissioner provided an update on the capital city’s efforts following this week’s Board of Governors meetings in New York.
Well, Sacramento gave us a report that they’re on schedule to be ready for the 2016‑2017 season. They’ve acquired the site. There is one piece of property remaining. It will either be purchased or foreclosed on by eminent domain. In light of legislation that was recently passed, that will not be a barrier to proceeding. There may be a referendum that citizens may try to call for ‑‑ not citizens, actually, non‑union workers who are unhappy to the deal to the employee workers in the arena. But it’s really going swimmingly.
The number of jobs that will be created for the construction, together with the number of jobs that are being created for the arena together with the number of jobs that are being created for the many new businesses that are going to be popping up as property sales pick up around the arena in sort of an urban renewal situation at the center of town, the owners were excited to hear the report from Sacramento.
In his last BOG meeting as commissioner, Stern confirmed that he would be in Sacramento next week for the regular season and home opener against the Denver Nuggets. The outgoing commissioner said he would be in attendance “to celebrate the success of that franchise in terms of their ticket sales and their sponsorships.”
