At least it sure looks like it. A comebacker in the fifth inning off his right knee (the one he had surgery on) caused him to leave the game. Wells had said that if he had one more setback during rehab or got injured again, he was retiring. This is probably going to cause him to retire (and incidentally, open up a rotation spot for Roger Clemens!). It’s a shame, because David Wells had a long and gifted career. If he does indeed retire, he retires with a 227-144 record, and a career ERA around 4.07 (not including tonight’s game, when he had 1 ER in 4.2 IP).
