Defensive backs coach Everett Withers has accepted a position with the University of Minnesota as their defensive coordinator. As the Titans defensive backs coach, Withers has been with the team since 2001, and has been responsible for coaching the cornerbacks.
Withers will join new Minnesota head coach Tim Brewster, whom he worked with at the University of Texas prior to joining the Titans.
Under Withers’ guidance, Samari Rolle and Andre Dyson received Pro Bowl honors, and Pacman Jones has developed into one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL.
Chuck Cecil, who coaches the safeties and nickelbacks for the Titans, should be the leading candidate to assume some or all of Withers’ duties.
The timing of this is fortunate for the Titans, since this is Senior Bowl week, which resembles a convention of coaches from all around the league. Networking is done and resumes passed out, so the Titans can get a quick handle on coaches who may be available to join the Titans in some joint relationship with Cecil. They’ll probably be flooded with candidates eager to apply.
Coach Jeff Fisher and DC Jim Schwartz have not commented on any possible replacements or new coaching structure.
The Golden Gophers are getting a good man. I wish Everett Withers all the best at Minnesota.
I like Chuck Cecil and have heard that Jeff Fisher does too. Chuck’s a straightforward guy, the type who will get in a player’s face, much like his style when he was a player. Here’s hoping that he gets the job.
