De La Rosa Struggles in Sox Loss

The Red Sox had taken the first two games of the series in KC, but they were unable to win 3 in a row.  Rubby De La Rosa took to the mound for the Sox, however he was unable to get the job done and only lasted 4 innings.  Additionally, the Sox bats were cold once again, so they were in line for a loss pretty early.

The Sox went down early when De La Rosa gave up 2 runs in the 1st inning.  Rubby gave up an RBI single to Aoki and then Aoki came home to score on a throwing error from Christian Vazquez.  Sox 0-2.  The Sox got one of those runs back in the 3rd when Cespedes hit an RBI sac fly to score Betts.  Unfortunately that would be the only run which the Sox would score last night.  Guthrie was getting the job done on his side and the Sox were not able to get to him during his 8 innings of work.  The game got away from De La Rosa in the bottom of the 4th and it would end up being his last inning.  Rubby gave up an RBI double to Perez, an RBI sac grounder to Infante and then Perez scored on a called balk from De La Rosa.  Sox 1-5.

As the 5th inning rolled around, De La Rosa was done for the night and knuckleballer Steven Wright took to the mound.  Wright pitched 3 scoreless innings and showed his continued value to the Sox bullpen.  Rookie Matt Barnes took the mound in the 8th inning and wasn’t able to keep the scoreless streak going.  Barnes gave up an RBI double to Gordon and then an RBI single to Infante.  Sox 1-7.  Sox pitching gave up way too many runs and the Sox offense was never able to get something going against Guthrie.

Red Sox 1  Royals 7  BOXSCORE

WP: Guthrie (11-11)  LP: De La Rosa (4-7)
