Behind a swarming defensive effort, Florida State evened its record at 3-3 with a 58-47 victory over Charleston Southern at the Donald L. Tucker Center on Friday night.
The Seminoles held Charleston Southern to 17 first half points and a field goal percentage below 30 for the contest. FSU never trailed in the victory.
Xavier Rathan-Mayes led FSU in scoring for a third straight game, finishing with 16 points. No other Seminole scored in double-figures. Leading scorer, Aaron Thomas, missed his second straight game.
Montay Brandon added 9 points in the victory while sophomore guard Dayshawn Watkins grabbed a team-high 8 rebounds in the victory. Watkins and freshman Phil Cofer each scored 7 points off the bench.
Guards Saah Nimley and Danny Upchurch each led the Buccaneers with 10 points. Senior Paul Gombwer added 8 points and a game-high 10 rebounds in the loss.
Florida State has now won consecutive games for the first time this season. The Seminoles will look to get over .500 as they host Nebraska on Monday in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
Charleston Southern (3-3) will host Western Carolina on Monday night.
