The NBA has named its 2014 all-league teams and DeMarcus Cousins did not make the cut. The Sacramento Kings starting center received 14 total votes, including one first-team vote.
Individually, Cousins had the best year of his career so far. He averaged 22.7 points, 11.7 rebounds and 2.9 assists – all career highs – in 71 games this season. He also posted a career high in field-goal percentage, shooting 49.6 percent this season. Cousins’ play, however, was not enough to get the Kings back in the playoffs. They missed the postseason for an eighth-straight season, finishing with a 28-54, identical to their record last year.
Cousins finished behind several other big men who also failed to make the first, second and third teams. Tim Duncan (63 votes), Anthony Davis (40 votes), Dirk Nowitzki (37 votes), DeAndre Jordan (21 votes), Roy Hibbert (17 votes) and Marc Gasol (16 votes) all finished ahead of Cousins in the balloting. The 23-year-old big man did garner more votes than Serge Ibaka (4), Zach Randolph (4), Paul Millsap (2), Chris Bosh (1) and Andre Drummond (1).
Joakim Noah (first team), Dwight Howard (second team), Kevin Love (second team), Blake Griffin (second team), Al Jefferson (third team) and LaMarcus Aldridge (third team) were the post players named All-NBA this year. Of the six aforementioned big men, Jefferson was the only one of the bunch that wasn’t named an All-Star this season.
The All-NBA teams were selected by a panel of 125 sportswriters and broadcasters around the country and in Canada. Media voted the teams by position with points awarded on a 5-3-1 basis. Cousins earned the votes of Darnell Mayberry (The Oklahoman), Gary Gerould (Kings radio), Grant Napear (Kings TV), Israel Gutierrez (ESPN), Jason Jackson (Heat TV), Jason Lloyd (Akron Beacon Journal), Phil Chenier (Wizards TV) and Steve Martin (Hornets TV). Jackson voted Cousins to the first team while Chenier voted the Kings starting center to the second team.
