Following Wednesday practice, DeMarcus Cousins met publicly with media for the first time since receiving a two-game suspension from the NBA. The league punished the 22-year-old big man for confronting TV announcer Sean Elliott in a “hostile manner” after Friday’s game between the Sacramento Kings and San Antonio Spurs.
“Just to see my team out there battling without me,” Cousins said of how difficult it was to sit out the last two contests. “Definitely a position I don’t want to be in again. And I apologize again to my teammates.”
Because Cousins and the NBPA are currently appealing the suspension, the Kings center was limited in what he could say. However when asked if he would like to set the record straight some day, Cousins suggested he was putting the incident behind him.
“I’m past that,” Cousins said. “People (are) going to believe what they want to believe. So, I’m not really worried about it.”
Cousins also admitted sitting two games showed him how much the Kings missed his presence. He noted the team was much smaller without him and that they lacked a presence on the interior in his absence.
“I already know that (they need me),” Cousins said of having to sit two games and watch his team lose from home. “But seeing it with my own eyes, I mean this team really does depend on me. So like I said, I’m going to go out there and do what I can to help my team win games.”
