DeMarcus Cousins suspended two games for confrontation with Spurs broadcaster Sean Elliott

The NBA has handed down a two-game suspension to DeMarcus Cousins for his role in a confrontation with broadcaster Sean Elliott following Friday night’s game between the Sacramento Kings and San Antonio Spurs.  Below is the league’s official release on the suspension.

New York, Nov. 11, 2012 — The Sacramento Kings’ DeMarcus Cousins has been suspended two games without pay for confronting Spurs announcer Sean Elliot in a hostile manner following San Antonio’s 97-86 over Sacramento November 9 at Sleep Train Arena, it was announced today by Stu Jackson, NBA Executive Vice President Basketball Operations.

Cousins will serve his suspension tonight when the Kings play the Los Angeles Lakers at Staples Center and Tuesday against Portland at Sleep Train Arena.

Mike Monroe of the San Antonio Express-News was the first to break news of the confrontation.  Elliot was critical of Cousins’ treatment of Tim Duncan during the broadcast.

“That’s why some humility is in order,” Elliott said on the Spurs’ telecast.  “You think you’re dominating Tim Duncan, you get it stuffed right back in your face. Timmy doesn’t like to talk trash. But if guys start talking mess to him, he’s going to respond. All that trash talking was premature. I’m not about to let these guys off the hook. Young ballclubs…should learn from this. Don’t start talking and flapping your gums against one of the greatest players ever. He’s going to make you pay. Tell me who got the best of this exchange.”

Cousins caught wind of Elliott’s in-game comments and searched him out following the Kings loss to the Spurs.  Following the confrontation, Cousins went off on Elliott to a confused group of reporters that had no idea an incident took place in the Kings’ locker room.  Here is video of that exchange with media.

This suspension couldn’t have come at a worse time for the Kings.  They’re already short-handed on their frontline for tonight’s game against the Lakers due to the the absence of Thomas Robinson.  The rookie forward was also suspended two games for an altercation with Detroit Pistons forward Jonas Jerebko earlier this week.
